Washburn's history starts circa 1883 in Chicago, Illinois and is now owned by U,S, Music Corp, a subsidiary of Exertis/JAM, a Canadian corporate group. In 1912 they are credited with building the first dreadnought guitar called the Lakeside Jumbo Guitar. Some accounts say it was an Oliver Ditson, which was one of their trade names. Various changes in ownership culminated with a sale to JAM Industries in 2009.
